The US Central Bank, our Federal Reserve System (or the Fed) is the backstop of our economy. They are the bank, of banks; the referee of the economy; the publicly-owned issuer of debt to the public. There is an alphabet soup of financial regulatory agencies and departments in the US government, and the Federal Reserve is arguably the most iconic. When it comes down to the “money pipeline,” not only do they have the legal authority to make fossil fuel finance more cumbersome (costly, less desirable), arguably the Fed could set limits on financing fossil fuels. That would mean, across the banking sector, every single bank under the Fed’s purview, all the big guys.
